  Five Years Earlier

  Kyle

Kyle had no idea how he'd let his mom and John talk him into going to a baby shower. He knew all of John's friends would be there, but that didn't make it any better. They were all so old compared to him. He was only twenty-two and fresh out of college. All of the guys were happy and in love, not to mention deep into having families. Heath was the only single one. It wasn't going to be so bad hanging out with him, Kyle thought. Heath was a nice guy who was totally stuck on his best friend Lisa. The only problem there was that Lisa was married to one of Heath's good friends. Kyle felt bad seeing Heath in love with someone he could never have.

When Kyle walked into the back door of the place they were having the shower at, Heath was having a conversation with John. Kyle had no idea what they were talking about, but Heath didn't waste any time including him.

"Right, Kyle," Heath yelled out. "Us single men will stick together. They can keep all this lovey crap while we get all the ladies. There's no need to settle down with one woman."

Heath walked over, wrapped his arm around Kyle's neck, and pulled him through the door to the main room as he looked back at John.

"Maybe we'll go out and pick some ladies up tonight while the rest of you suckers are stuck at home," Heath yelled back over his shoulder.

What the hell did I just walk into, was all Kyle could think. He watched the look on Heath's face change when his eyes met with a woman's from across the room. It was like he had seen a ghost, and he knocked his shit off fast about going out to pick up ladies, which Kyle was happy about. It didn't take long for Kyle to realize that Heath had put himself in a very awkward position he needed to get out of. It made Kyle smile, as he watched Heath talk his way through the situation so they could get back to the kitchen and away from all of the women that were crowded around.

Kyle helped Josh with some of the food but didn't leave the kitchen again. There was no way he wanted to witness another awkward situation or be a part of crazy baby games. The shower seemed to drag on forever. What could they find to talk and laugh about for that long, he wondered? Kyle was standing behind Heath by the door, when he saw Heath push it open and watch the woman from earlier laughing hysterically. He shook his head and watched Heath's expression. He's screwed, Kyle thought. What a sucker. All that talk about being single was crap. There was definitely something going on between Heath and his mystery woman.

When Kyle heard a soft laugh coming from a few chairs away from where Heath was staring, he looked around the table. His eyes stopped on the beautiful woman sitting next to Julie. She was younger than the rest of the women at the table, much younger. He had never seen her at their group's functions before. She reached up and covered her laugh with her hand. A piece of her long, silky hair fell in front of her face, and Kyle couldn't help but want to brush it aside for her. When she took her hand away from her face, all Kyle could see was the most perfect smile.

He noticed Heath looking over at him and smiled.

  "What?" Heath asked.

"Who's the girl sitting next to Julie?" Kyle asked.

"That's Gavin's secretary. Her name is Jenny. Why?" Heath asked.

"No reason," Kyle answered. "I was just wondering."

"Sure," Heath said. "Don't get any ideas. Gavin would have your head."

Kyle went back into the kitchen to wait until he was released to leave. He needed to get out of there and hang out with some guys his own age.

The shower was finally over, and he was called in to help carry things so all of the pregnant women didn't lift anything. He saw Jenny walk back through the front door and couldn't help but watch her. She walked over and handed Gavin a bunch of stuff from work. Gavin was talking about staying home for the week to get the nursery ready. Kyle watched Jenny turn and walk over to talk to Becky. He couldn't peel his eyes away from her and couldn't help but feel like a teenager in high school.

She made eye contact with him twice before he heard Gavin call him over to where he was standing. Heath smiled and gave Kyle an "I told you so" look on his way by. Kyle walked up to Gavin and sighed.

  "Yes," Kyle said.

"Don't even think about it. She's my secretary and the only one I trust. I've been home a lot lately. If it weren't for her, I'd have to be there watching things. Don't even think about messing with her. She's a great girl. I won't have you messing with her head," Gavin said.

"I wasn't going to say a word to her. That's not my thing. I need to concentrate on work and impressing Ethan. He's been really awesome with teaching me things. I want to own my own company one day. I don't have time to waste on a relationship. Besides, I wouldn't want to leave Heath hanging as the only single guy. What would he do?"

Kyle turned around and walked away. He gave Heath a shitty look on the way out. It was time to go out for a few drinks with people that weren't friends of his parents or related to work in any way. He needed to get away from it all, especially her. Through high school and college, he'd never had an instant reaction the moment he'd laid eyes on a woman.

She was Gavin's secretary and was completely off limits. He had way more important things he needed to concentrate on. Ethan had only hired him on months before. He had taken Kyle under his wing and was showing him so many things it would've taken him years to learn anyplace else. The more Kyle watched Ethan, the more he knew he was going to own a company of his own one day. He was going to strive to do just as well as Ethan, and he was looking forward to the journey ahead of him. Kyle didn't have time to get wrapped up in a woman or a relationship. There was only one problem with is plan. No matter how hard he tried or what he did to get his mind off of Jenny, he couldn't shake the feeling he got when their eyes connected. The one woman he couldn't have was
the only woman he could think about.

  Chapter 1

  Kyle

Kyle was sitting in his office looking between two of the monitors. He was typing away at the keyboard when his phone began to vibrate and move across his desk. When he looked down to see it was his mother calling, he slid his finger up the screen to send her to his voicemail. He was deep in the middle of his thoughts about the game he was working on and didn't want to be interrupted. Kyle figured he'd call her back on his drive home. She most likely just wanted to talk about his sister or something family related anyway. When she didn't call right back, he smiled and dove back into his work.

Ten minutes later, Ethan walked in and stood with his shoulder against the door. Kyle waited a moment hoping Ethan would turn back around and leave, but he knew it wasn't going to happen.

"Yes," Kyle said, without looking up from the screen in front of him.

  "Call your mother," Ethan said.

Kyle could hear the smirk he knew he'd find on Ethan's face when he finally lifted his eyes from the screen. Kyle's eyes closed tight before opening again to see Ethan still standing there.

"You know damn well my brother called me the second you sent her to voicemail. Couldn't you at least let it ring enough to let the call go there on its own?" he asked.

Kyle rolled his eyes and smiled.

"He seriously called you?" Kyle asked.

"He did," Ethan said. "I may not be able to play the boss card on your ass anymore, but I have no problem pulling the uncle card."

"Very funny," Kyle said. "I'm busy trying to get stuff done. Shouldn't your ass be home changing diapers or something?"

"Family is what matters, Kyle," Ethan said. "Take it from someone whose mom died when he was small and whose dad couldn't be bothered. When your mom calls, you answer. There is only one other person you always answer for quicker than your mother. That's not something you have to deal with yet."

"I won't have to ever worry about that," Kyle said. "I thought you weren't coming into the office anymore. You always seem to be here. Go home to your wife and twenty kids."

"You won't be talking that shit when you fall in love. It'll come out of nowhere, and she'll knock you on your ass before you know what hit you. I'll be right there to laugh my ass off when it happens. I only have four kids by the way. Don't keep making it seem like more. My woman would kick your butt if she heard you."

"On second thought," Kyle said with a laugh. "I don't think you need to be home. If you even look at Julie, she gets pregnant."

"I can't help that my woman looks cute pregnant," Ethan said. "She's happy with our family of six. I wanted more, but she wasn't having it."

"Maybe if you'd let her breathe for more than a second in between, she'd change her mind," Kyle said.

Ethan's phone rang, and he looked down at the screen.

"The wifey calls. Call your mother. I'm going home."

"I'll make sure to call her when I get home, Uncle Ethan," Kyle said in his best toddler voice.

Ethan gave him a dirty look, as he put his phone up to his ear and turned to walk away.

  "What's up, woman?"

Kyle sat back in his chair and looked around his huge office proud of what he had accomplished in five years. He joked around with his uncle and gave him a hard time, but he was so thankful for everything Ethan had done for him.

Everything he learned was because of Ethan. He'd taken him to meetings with huge clients, taught him so much about the business, and shown him more about gaming than he could have ever figured out on his own. Whatever Kyle created on his own, Ethan let him keep the rights to. He even helped him on weekends when Kyle was stuck on what he was doing. Ethan's company bought a few of Kyle's personal games from him. He owed every bit of his success to Ethan. For five years, Ethan worked beside him and molded him into the man he had become. It was the best decision he'd ever made going with Ethan's company. When he originally was made to choose between Ethan and Gavin, John was the one to help him decide. He had no idea that Ethan would end up being his uncle.

When Julie got pregnant the last time, Ethan decided it was time to make some changes and be home to help her. Slowly, he began cutting back his hours. Kyle knew it was to see if he could handle things alone. Julie and Ethan had already had Little Ethan and a set of twin boys. The whole group gave them so much shit for having twins. They had messed with Gavin and Becky so much over their twins. It was right there biting them in the rear. The twins were only nine months old when Julie ended up pregnant again. That was when Kyle noticed Ethan cutting back slightly on his hours. By the time she had their beautiful little girl, he was only going into the office three days a week.

Ethan made Kyle an equal partner in the company even though Kyle didn't feel he deserved it at all. His five years didn't at all compare to the time Ethan had put in to build it into what it was. Kyle knew he would put in as many hours as it took to build the company even higher and show Ethan he had made the right decision believing in him. Nobody had ever believed in Kyle like that before. His dad was pretty good to him growing up, but he hadn't talked to him in over five years. Not since he found out what he'd done to Kelly, John, and his mom. John was a great guy. He took Kyle in right along with Kelly and did everything Kyle needed to be able to build his future. He treated him as his own son. The belief Ethan had in him was different. They had the same passion for the same things. There was an instant bond between the two of them. They spent hours upon hours working together. Julie never gave them a single bit of grief over any of it. She really was amazing. He always called her Aunt Julie. It irritated the shit out of Ethan which gave Kyle even more joy doing it.

Their little girl was already six months old and Ethan was still going into the office here and there. He never stayed long, but it freaked Kyle out every time. Kyle knew he was just doing it to keep in touch with his people and partly because he needed to get out of the house a bit. Ethan still had a room in his house devoted to his work. Julie could joke all she wanted, but she still found time to play their new games.

Ethan never made Kyle feel like he was less than him. He always told Kyle how proud he was and encouraged him in everything he wanted to do. For some reason, Kyle felt the need to always prove himself to Ethan. He wanted to make him proud.

Kyle stood up and looked around his office one more time. With a huge smile on his face, and a sense of accomplishment, he grabbed his stuff and headed home for the night.

  Chapter 2

  Kyle

Kyle pulled his car up his long driveway with a smile on his face. He'd recently moved out of the apartment that he had lived in for five years. It was the same apartment his mom had first lived in when she'd moved back to Pennsylvania. He thought about how nervous he was accepting a job with Ethan and moving to a place he had never been to other than a very short visit. His mom was moving in with John, and Kyle was able to afford the rent with his new job. The two-bedroom apartment had enough space for him and the computers he needed. Most of his time was spent at the office or Ethan's house, so Kyle never felt a need to own anything bigger. He was able to keep it clean and used his second bedroom for his home office.

When Ethan made the decision to bring Kyle in as a partner, Kyle decided it was time for an upgrade. He'd be able to have people from the office over and couldn't wait to have more room for his computers and gaming equipment.

The house he found was beautiful. It had a nice area of land surrounding it and was totally secluded. When he had first been to Heath's house, he knew he wanted something similar. The house he found had a very long driveway and was surrounded by woods. There was a huge garage, a wrap-around porch, and a hot tub on an awesome deck.

Kyle got out of his car and let himself in. It was very quiet. That was the only thing he wasn't fond of. In the apartment, he could always hear people coming and going. He knew once he was used to the privacy, he was going to wonder why he hadn't moved sooner. His main floor had a living room, dining room, famil
y room, huge kitchen, and two doors leading to a sunroom. The door on the other side of that room led out to the deck and hot tub. The upstairs had five bedrooms. One of them was made into his home office. There was a huge basement that was finished but completely open. That was his space. He'd worked on it for over a month. All of his computers and gaming equipment were set up perfectly. He had televisions that covered an entire wall. It was a true man cave.

Heath and John spent so much time helping him get everything done the way he wanted it. John enjoyed spending time with Kyle. They had really built a great relationship over the years. Kelly had the twins and a little one to keep her busy. She ended up having a little boy that they named after his grandpa. John played the proud and very protective grandpa to all three of the kids. Kyle knew if he ever had kids, John would be the same way with his. He really was an amazing man. With Sandy being the only one living with John, he seemed to enjoy the guy time he got with Kyle. Between pizza and beer, the three guys really had done a great job on the house. Heath was happy to work with Kyle on changing certain things with the house to fit his needs. It had come out looking perfect. Kyle knew he would forever owe Heath for all of his hard work, even though he never expected a single thing in return for what he had done. Kyle and Heath had given each other shit here and there, but they got along really well.

Kyle put his bag down as soon as he walked through the door and kicked his shoes off. He took his suit jacket off and hung it over a chair with his tie. He undid his sleeves and rolled them up before heading to the kitchen for a beer and throwing a frozen dinner in the microwave. Kyle ran upstairs and turned on his laptop while he waited for his food. He sat down at his small kitchen table to eat in silence, as he looked down at his phone.

Kyle was excited about his new place and his accomplishments. He'd worked his ass off for five years. The entire time was spent concentrating on his work. He hung out with some guys from the company from time to time and spent an evening with a woman here and there, but he never put time into having a relationship. His goal was to establish a life he could be proud of before finding someone to share it with. It helped that the one woman he wanted had always been off limits.
